Introduction to Experimental Design for Plant Improvement Programs - CANCELLED

Due to facilitator availability on the new dates this workshop has been cancelled.  The committee is looking at other similar workshops and will advise once confirmed,

This workshop will introduce participants to the principles of experimental design and reinforce the importance of these principles when it comes to the conduct of agricultural research experiments, with a particular focus on design solutions for plant improvement programs. The workshop will begin with a review of elementary experimental design principles and an exploration of simple block designs, with an extension to blocking in multiple dimensions. The use and applicability of partially replicated designs will also be discussed, along with the potential to improve upon these designs through the incorporation of correlation between treatments (genotypes) using pedigree or marker relationships.  Multi-phase designs will also be introduced, with these designs being of great importance when treatments (genotypes) are tested in the field, and then in the laboratory. These different design solutions will be investigated in an optimal design framework for a range of case studies including field, laboratory and controlled environment experiments. Hands-on practical sessions will also provide participants with the opportunity to develop skills to design their own experiments using two packages in the R statistical computing environment.
